Brit Valley Project, Land Recovery Pilot
Website and Content Project
The Brit Valley Project, one of DEFRA's Landscape Recovery pilot initiatives, is led by West Dorset Wilding and brings together over 50 project partners across the Brit Valley catchment in West Dorset. They approached us to design a website that reflects their mission of restoring nature on a landscape scale while supporting sustainable agriculture. We crafted a community-focused, accessible platform that appeals to diverse audiences. The site highlights the project’s ambitious vision for 3,500+ hectares of nature-positive land management, fostering public connection with nature, and promoting long-term environmental restoration, farm prosperity, and community well-being.
Millie, Project Manager at West Dorset Wilding
“Yada at Flax is absolutely brilliant! I really can't sing her praises highly enough. She was so quick to understand our brief and target audience, clearly has such good design intuition and was really efficient at getting lots done quickly and always communicating progress and asking for feedback. For our project it was also really helpful that she took lots of initiative and made great suggestions based on her website expertise. As a bonus she was also really good value for money. Off the back of our initial work we have gone on to work with Flax on an ongoing basis for content creation and design and website support.”
The Website
The Brit Valley Project website, built on Wix, was designed to balance bold, simple aesthetics with practical functionality, aligning closely with the project’s strong brand identity. We emphasised clarity and ease of use, ensuring key information was accessible without overwhelming users. The site features an interactive storymap, which will be updated by the client, a password-protected area for project partners to access documents, and a blog we named the 'Community Noticeboard,' which includes interviews highlighting the farmers, landowners, and other key contributors driving the project forward.
To foster community engagement, we integrated a newsletter sign-up and contact form, while ensuring a seamless experience across both desktop and mobile platforms. Accessibility was a priority, so we ran the site through a checker to meet necessary standards. Additionally, we implemented advanced SEO techniques to maximise the site’s reach. The final product offers a thoughtfully designed, user-friendly space that reflects the collaborative spirit and environmental mission of the Brit Valley Project.
Content
In collaboration with the team, we edited a series of video interviews featuring project partners, blending authentic footage of landworkers and their farms with carefully sound-engineered music to create a professional, engaging result. These videos, tailored for both the website and social media, aimed to spotlight the people behind the project, sharing their history, connection to the land, and hopes for the future. We created both longform and shorter videos, ensuring they remained accessible and engaging across different platforms. To maintain brand consistency, we incorporated the Brit Valley Project’s logo and brand font into each video.
In addition to video production, we assisted with website content, refining copy and selecting impactful photos from the client’s archive. Our content approach was grounded in a down-to-earth tone, ensuring the project partners’ voices were front and center, reflecting their vital role in the project and building a strong connection with the wider community.
